New Home- MOVE IN

Great! You've purchased a new home! You’re probably daydreaming about decor and paint schemes and new furniture. BUT WAIT!  There's more!

Switch the Utilities

I can't tell you how many times my new buyers move in then call me three days later to say their gas isn't working... Be sure you schedule the transfer of utilities for the day you move in!  The previous owners will turn it off.  Do you want light?  Water? Air conditioning? Ask your realtor who the providers are for your new home.  Often they can get phone numbers and names of all of the companies you need to contact.

Change the locks

Who has the keys to your new home?  Who knows.  Neighbors?  Friends? Cleaning ladies? Tenants? This is always the first step- even before you move your belongings in.  If you negotiated a home warranty into your contract SOME companies include this in their packages, so check there first!

Mail Keys

No mailbox in your yard means you need to bring your closing disclosure signed by both parties to your local post office.  You can find out which is your office by clicking here.  Be sure to call before you make the trek out there and verify they service your address!  Do this within 90 days EVEN if you have keys.  They will switch out the lock and give you new keys too!

Security

Now is the time to set up service!  Did you know this is negotiable too?  Did you know your realtor can help get you free installation?

Steam Clean the Carpets

Pets, kids- God only knows what happened there before it was yours.  So if you didn't negotiate this into the contract- make arrangements.

Call an exterminator

Welcome to Texas- where everything is bigger, even the bugs!  This is a good first step to take and often you'll want to complete this shortly after closing.  Just clean it out before moving in.

Home Cleaning
Yup the fun part!  Fun fact- this is often a gift I give my home buyers for pre-owned homes.  The first thing you do shouldn't be cleaning up from the previous owners.  Another fun fact? This is something you can work in in negotiations too!  Ask me how.

Welcome home!
